Unusually for Alex Rider villains (possibly barring Julius Grief), Jon Lucas is said to be a young man, though his precise age is never outright stated. He appears "young, bearded, quite scrawny with tangled hair and glasses".
Lucas is said to be a strict vegan; however, when he dressed up as a cowboy, he is said to be wearing leather accessories. In addition, he is also a health freak, having come in ninth place in the San Francisco Marathon the year prior to the events of Nightshade Rising, which Edward Pleasure describes as being quite an achievement, given the six thousand entrants in the marathon.
Lucas has two main eccentricities. The first is his preference to go barefoot, especially in his office, to the point of having a carpeted escalator installed, in order to feel like the beach. He also has a large fish tank in the office to this effect.
The second eccentricity is a fondness for cowboys. Lucas owns a restored Wild West ranch and town called El Dorado, in Redwoods State Park. The town is restored to look how it would in the Wild West days, with period buildings. His favourite film is implicitly For a Few Dollars More, a scene from which he wants Alex and Freddy to act out together, down to having a musical pocket watch (one of Lucas's own possessions) countdown to a shootout.
